Scores of drones spotted flying over Paris: Police

Dozens of drones resembling the one shown in the file photo have been seen flying over Paris.

French security sources say police have received reports of dozens of drone sightings over sensitive areas in the country's capital, Paris.

An unnamed police source said on Wednesday that authorities were attempting to determine whether the reports were actually “drone flights” or not.

The drone sightings were reported Tuesday night near the River Seine, the Place de la Concorde, the Invalides military museum, and near the Paris ring road. No arrests have been made yet.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said on the same day that since last October around 60 such incidents had been reported over nuclear plants in the country or over Paris.

In recent months, a number of journalists have been detained or fined for flying drones over France, which is against the law.

This week, a British journalist was fined 1,000 euros ($1,100) in court for flying a drone over central Paris

Three others, including Al-Jazeera journalist Tristan Redman, were arrested last month in the Bois de Boulogne park. Redman pleaded guilty later to flying a drone in Paris and the two others were released.

The arrests came shortly after mysterious drone sightings were reported near the US embassy, the Eiffel Tower and a number of other major areas leading in and out of the French capital.

In October and November 2014, a mysterious spate of drone flights was reported over French nuclear plants. However, no one claimed responsibility for the overflights.

The French law bans aircraft of all types from flying within five kilometers of nuclear facilities. However, there had been at least 15 reports of drone sighting over nuclear reactors across France last October, raising concerns over the country’s nuclear safety.
