Iran nuclear talks opportunity should not be missed: EU

European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini

European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini says Iran and its negotiating partners should not miss the opportunity to ink a deal on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.

“At this crucial stage of the negotiations, the EU is fully committed to facilitating the talks to reach a comprehensive deal. We should not miss this historical opportunity,” Mogherini told Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry on the phone on Tuesday.

Iranian and US delegations wrapped up their latest round of talks over Iran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Montreux on Tuesday.

The two-day negotiations were headed by the Iranian foreign minister and his US counterpart.

Representatives from Iran and the United States had held three rounds of intense negotiations in the Swiss city of Geneva on February 22-23 to bridge their differences ahead of a July 1 deadline for Iran and the P5+1 to reach a comprehensive nuclear deal.

Iran and the P5+1 group - Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany - have already missed two self-designated deadlines for inking a final agreement since they signed an interim one in November 2013.
