After an almost 7 year wait, a collapsed first inquest because police officers changed their statements and four weeks hat Beaconsfield Coroners Court - the jury in the inquest of 39 year old Habib Ullah - who died while being restrained by police in 2008 - gave their verdict.

The coroner here had allowed a verdict of unlawful killing to be considered. Raising the hopes of Habibs friends and family. But the jury ruled a verdict of misadventure, indicating that the death was due to an accident.

The family said they were disappointed but not surprised. That narrative was damning.

The jury said the restraint was “uncoordinated and ineffective". They questioned whether the level of force was appropriate. They said the techniques used such as nose pinching and gripping Habib’s throat were not formally trained and carried additional risks. No practical assistance was given when Habib became unconscious. Overall the jury concluded that the incident was poorly managed.

Habib’s mum and sister told me, they believed the police’s actions were inhuman. The family have vowed to continue fighting

Habib Ullah’s death is added to the list of over 1,500 who have died in police custody or after police contact in Britain since 1990. Not one police officer has ever been convicted. Nargess
