IAEA chief declares lack of diversion in Iran's declared nuclear material
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has once again verified lack of any diversion toward non-peaceful purposes in Iran’s declared nuclear material.
“Concerning safeguards implementation in Iran, the agency continues to verify the non-diversion of nuclear material declared by Iran under its Safeguards Agreement,” the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said in an address to the agency’s Board of Governors in the Austrian capital city of Vienna on Monday.
He added that the UN nuclear agency would continue to undertake monitoring and verification in relation to Iran’s nuclear measures as agreed in the Joint Plan of Action between Iran and the P5+1 countries.
Amano said Iran still needs to provide explanations that will enable the IAEA to clarify two outstanding practical measures agreed in May 2014 in the third step of the Framework for Cooperation signed between Tehran and the nuclear agency.
He emphasized that Iran also has still to propose new practical measures.
Amano expressed the IAEA’s readiness to accelerate the resolution of all outstanding issues under the Framework for Cooperation.
Iran and the IAEA signed a joint statement on November 11, 2013, to outline a roadmap for mutual cooperation on certain outstanding nuclear issues.
In May 2014, the two sides held a technical meeting within the Framework for Cooperation agreed in November 2013. During the meeting, they agreed to five practical measures to be implemented by August 25, 2014.
On September 15, 2014, the IAEA chief confirmed that Iran had enforced three of the five transparency measures it had previously agreed to, and said Tehran and the IAEA had begun talks on the implementation of the two remaining measures.
Iran says it has granted the IAEA access to sites which the agency claims need to be investigated in order to clarify the outstanding issues.
Iran has time and again emphasized its readiness for full cooperation with the IAEA.
