Russian state TV has aired a video purportedly showing the moment Russian opposition figure Boris Nemtsov was killed in Moscow.

The surveillance camera video released late Sunday allegedly shows the moment Nemtsov was walking across a bridge near the Kremlin before he was gunned down by an unidentified man.

The late Friday murder has triggered a massive condemnation in Russia with many blaming the Kremlin for orchestrating the assassination. The government has called the murder a scenario to tarnish its image.

Nemtsov was one of the vocal critics of the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s policies in Ukraine where an armed conflict has claimed the lives of more than 5,700 people.

According to the Russian media outlets, the grainy video shows a white car pulling up near Nemtsov who was walking with a female companion at the night. At the moment of the shooting, the view of Nemtsov and his companion is blocked by a snowplow.

The killing happened a day before a planned protest by Nemtsov against Putin.

Tens of thousands marched in central Moscow on Sunday in commemoration of Nemtsov. Carrying flowers and portraits, the mourners marched to the bridge where Nemtsov was gunned down. However, police estimated the number of people at around 16,000.

According to Nemtsov’s lawyer, Vadim Prohorov, over the last few months the politician had started to receive death threats on social media sites.

The major opposition figure served as the first deputy prime minister under former President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s.

Russia's federal investigative agency said it was looking into several possible motives for Nemtsov's murder.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday condemned the killing as part of the smear campaign against the Russian leadership, saying it "had all the hallmarks of a contract killing and is entirely provocative in nature."
