Iraqi forces, backed by Shia volunteers, have started fighting the ISIL Takfiri terrorists to liberate the northern province of Salahuddin.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in Samarra, north of the capital Baghdad, on Sunday that thousands of the country’s troops have launched a massive military operation against the ISIL militants to clear the restive province.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Saad al-Hadithi, an advisor to Iraqi prime minister, said al-Abadi, as the country's Commander in Chief, “has ordered from the holy city of Samarra the launch of operations to flush out ISIL terrorist gangs” from Salahuddin Province.

According to Iraqi officials the joint forces are intensively shelling the city of Tikrit, the administrative center of Salahuddin Province, and several other areas.

Based on the latest reports, Iraq's warplanes have started bombing ISIL positions in Tikrit, the capital city of Salahuddin Province.

The province is reportedly under siege from all sides. Droves of citizens have been evacuating their towns since Friday.

The Iraqi military backed by volunteer forces has been fighting against the ISIL terrorists in Salahuddin since mid-2014. The troops have also taken back most areas in the province from the Takfiri terrorists.

The volunteer forces say fighting the terrorists and flushing them out of the areas were not easy as the Takfiris were equipped with heavy weapons. The forces also said the Takfiri terrorists used mosques in the areas as their bases for military operations.

Most parts of Salahuddin are in control of ISIL Takfiri terrorists. They have been engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.

Iraqi soldiers, police units, Kurdish forces, Shia volunteers and Sunni tribesmen have succeeded in driving the ISIL terrorists out of some areas in Iraq.
