Arab League slams ISIL destruction of Iraq artifacts

Arab League chief, Nabil al-Arabi

The Arab League has decried the destruction of invaluable ancient artifacts in the Iraqi city of Mosul by the ISIL Takfiri group.

On Friday, the chief of the Arab League, Nabil al-Arabi, issued a statement, denouncing as an "odious crime" the act of vandalism by the Takfiri group at the Ninawa museum in Mosul, which has become a hub of the militants.

"This barbaric attack against the cultural heritage of the Iraqi people is one of the most odious crimes committed in our day and age against the heritage of humanity," Arabi, who heads the 22-member Cairo-based organisation, said in the statement.

The ISIL Takfiri group released a new video on Thursday showing its militants using sledgehammers and drills to smash ancient statues at the museum, which puts on exhibit Assyrian artifacts dating back to the 9th century BC.

In the same vein, the Dar al-Ifta, the Egyptian body which rules on Islamic law, condemned the destruction of Iraqi artifacts by the ISIL Takfiri group, saying the terrorist group is ignorant of the teachings of Islam.

Condemnation of Assyrians abduction

The Arab League chief separately condemned the ISIL Takfiri group’s kidnapping of at least 220 Assyrian civilians in the northeast of Syria.

Using the Arabic acronym of the Takfirir group, Arabi deprecated "abductions and torture committed by Daesh against the Assyrian community".

According to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Thursday, the Assyrian civilians were abducted from 11 villages in Tel Tamer countryside in Hasakah Province in northeastern Syria.

The hostages have been taken to Abd al-Aziz mount southwest of Tel Tamer, a town located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the northwest of Hasakah, the Britain-based group added.

Over the past months, Assyrians, who come from one of the world’s oldest Christian communities, have been under increasing threat by the ISIL terrorists.

The ISIL militants, with members from several Western countries, control some parts of Syria and Iraq, and have been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities.
