At least 15 people have been injured in clashes between security forces and demonstrators protesting against the killing of a pro-independence fighter in the Indian-administered Kashmir.

On Wednesday, hundreds of demonstrators flooded the streets in Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar, situated about 648 kilometers (403 miles) north of the Indian capital, New Delhi, to denounce the shooting death of the man by Indian troops.

Violence erupted after protesters threw rocks at police forces, who attacked the protesters shortly afterward, hurling tear gas canisters at the demonstrators and firing live bullets into the air to disperse the crowd.

“At least 15 people were injured in the clashes, including nine policemen and a district administrator,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity.

The development comes a day after Indian soldiers cordoned off the village of Heff, located around 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Srinagar, engaging in a battle with pro-independence forces. A pro-independence fighter was killed in the process while three government troops sustained injuries.

Kashmir has been a matter of dispute between India and its neighbor Pakistan since their independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The arch-rivals lay claim to the whole region but each of them only controls a section of it.

The two countries agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control in 2003, and a year later launched talks aimed at brokering a regional peace.
