Netanyahu trying to thwart any deal between Iran and P5+1: US foreign policy analyst

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants neither a “good deal” nor a “bad deal” between Iran and six world powers, rather he wants a “no deal” at all, an American foreign policy analyst says.

“For Netanyahu, and the Likud government, and his colleagues in Israel, there are no good deals with Iran,” said Ian Williams, a senior analyst at Foreign Policy in Focus, a policy think tank based in Washington, DC.

“Their strategic purpose is to keep Iran isolated and the US hostile to Iran,” he told Press TV in an interview on Wednesday. “So they are not worried about a good deal, they are worried about any deal whatsoever.”

“And with their traditional insouciance about national sovereignty of the US, Bibi Netanyahu has been shamelessly interfering in American politics to thwart any attempt by the administration to come to a deal –  good or bad – with Iran," Williams stated.

Iran and the P5+1 group of  states – Britain, France, China, Russia, the United States, Germany –  are holding negotiations to narrow remaining differences ahead of a deadline in late March for a framework agreement between the two sides. The deadline for the final agreement is July 1.

Netanyahu and some other officials in his regime have accused the Obama administration of trying to strike a “bad deal” with Iran.

On Tuesday, US Secretary of State John Kerry criticized officials who are speaking against a potential nuclear agreement with Iran.

“Anybody running around right now, jumping in to say well we don’t like the deal, or this or that, doesn’t know what the deal is,” Kerry told the US Senate Appropriations Committee. “And I caution people to wait and see what these negotiations produce.”

Commenting to Press TV, Williams said, “One keeps hoping that the White House and Kerry will actually show appreciation that Netanyahu is really their enemy on this. He and his government are trying to thwart US foreign policy objectives for their own ends.”
