Iran, IAEA to expedite cooperation: Iranian official

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi meets International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Yukiya Amano, Austrian capital, Vienna, February 24, 2015.

A senior Iranian nuclear negotiator says Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have decided to enhance their cooperation within the framework of the nuclear talks between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1.

“Today, I had a very good discussion with [IAEA Director Genera Yukiya] Amano,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi told Press TV after a meeting with the UN atomic agency’s chief in Vienna.

“We were able to review the course of cooperation between Iran and the Agency and we decided to expedite that cooperation, acknowledging the important role of the Agency in any future possible agreement between Iran and the P5+1,” he added.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister then explained about the latest round of nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries in the Swiss city of Geneva.

“We had very intense but useful and constructive negotiation in the past three or four days and we were able to make some progress…. Nothing is agreed until everything is agreed so we were able to make some progress but still there are lots of things to be done,” he said.

Araqchi noted that the two sides “have still a long way to go,” before reaching an agreement because “still some differences exist but we are moving forward, trying hard and we´re hopeful.”

Reflecting on the subject of the talks, the Iranian diplomat said, “We have dealt with all different issues, including sanctions, which is a key issue for us.  As I said, we have been able to make progress, some progress in some areas, but in other areas differences are still there.”

Pointing to the role of the American side in the Geneva negotiations, Araqchi said, “The American presence was very constructive. They had two secretaries at the same time in the negotiations. It was very useful and helped this progress to be made.”
