Rouhani reaffirms peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani addresses a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran on February 23, 2015.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says no one can claim Tehran’s nuclear program has a non-peaceful nature.

Addressing a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran on Monday, Rouhani said great pressure has been exerted on the Iranian nation over the past 12 years just because it pursued its right to achieve nuclear technology and know-how.

He added that Iran is still under “illogical pressure” because the group of countries monopolizing technology and science is trying to prevent other states from joining their club.

“This aggressive attitude is a clear example of scientific discrimination which can target any developing country,” the Iranian president stated.

Rouhani’s remarks come as Iran and the P5+1 group – Britain, France, China, Russia, and the United States plus Germany – are holding talks in the Swiss city of Geneva to narrow their differences on the outstanding issues over Iran's nuclear program.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany have missed two deadlines since an interim deal was signed in November 2013. The have set July 1 as the next deadline for the talks.

The scale of Iran’s uranium enrichment and the timetable for the removal of anti-Iran sanctions are seen as the major stumbling blocks in the talks.
