Crimea to prosecute Poroshenko over reintegration remarks

Crimea’s Prime Minister Sergey Valeryevich Aksyonov

The Republic of Crimea says it will put Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on trial for his remarks about bringing the region back under Kiev’s rule.

"We pledged to convene a military tribunal in Crimea for Poroshenko and, believe us, we will deliver on our pledge. We will bring him here and try him," said Crimea’s Prime Minister Sergey Valeryevich Aksyonov in the region’s administrative center, Simferopol, on Monday.

Noting that Crimea’s territorial status will not change under any circumstances, Aksyonov added, "Crimea will never return to Ukraine. Crimea has returned to its home country, the Russian Federation, forever."

Poroshenko pledges Crimea reintegration

Earlier in the day, Poroshenko (pictured below) vowed to restore Crimea to the Ukrainian territory.

"The Ukrainian state will regain control over this temporarily occupied territory. I am not saying that this will be a simple thing to do which we will go through quickly. But this will happen by all means,” he said in the Ukrainian capital city of Kiev.

"Ukraine will never give up its sovereign right to Crimea and will defend the rights of the people who live there. The Ukrainian leadership, politicians and civil society have reached a complete consensus on this. We enjoy absolute support for this course from other states and from international organizations," he added.

Crimea's secession

Back in March 2014, Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula of Crimea joined the Russian Federation following a referendum, a move which greatly frayed Moscow-Kiev ties.

Relations were strained further after Ukraine launched military operations in mid-April 2014 to silence the pro-Russia protests in the country’s mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine.

Kiev, the US and the European Union accuse Moscow of involvement in the chaotic situation in eastern Ukraine and have imposed a series of sanctions against Russian and pro-Russia figures. Moscow, however, rejects the accusation and has retaliated with sanctions of its own.
