UN climate panel chief investigated over sexual harassment
Police in India have launched an investigation into claims that Rajendra K. Pachauri, the head of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), sexually harassed a female employee at his institute.
"There are a few charges we are investigating," an Indian police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Friday.
The 29-year-old woman, who is a researcher at Pachauri's Delhi-based Energy and Resources Institute, has lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police, claiming that Pachauri, a 74-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, had repeatedly treated her inappropriately, both physically and through emails, texts and WhatsApp messages. Pachauri has rejected the accusations.
The Nobel laureate is planning to broker a worldwide accord to tackle global warming at a crucial climate change summit in Paris in December.
Pachauri’s lawyers said he has been a victim of hacking, adding that his emails, mobile phone and WhatsApp messages have been hacked in an attempt to malign him.
There was evidence of “misuse of my computer resources and communication devices, without my permission or consent,” the UN official stated.
Serving as the head of the IPCC since 2002, Pachauri is considered as one of the world's leading figures on the issue of global warming.
He was jointly awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore for their role in promoting public awareness of climate change.
