White House feels ‘sorry’ for Rudy Giuliani

White House press secretary Josh Earnest

President Barack Obama’s spokesman says he feels “sorry” for former mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani for saying that the US president does not love the country.

"I feel sorry for Rudy Giuliani," White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on Friday.

Earlier this week, the ex-mayor said President Obama does not love the United States.

"I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America — He doesn't love you. And he doesn't love me. He wasn't brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country," Giuliani said.

Earnest said it was sad to see “when somebody who has attained a certain level of public stature, and even admiration, tarnishes a legacy so thoroughly.”

The controversial remarks by the former Republican mayor sparked outrage among a number of American officials.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chair of the Democratic National Committee, condemned the remarks.

“In all seriousness, I rarely agreed with President Bush, but I never questioned his love for our country. I don’t often agree with my Republican colleagues on the Hill, but I know they love America,” she said on Thursday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said nobody should be attacking the president’s basic love for the country.

"We can have political differences without going to the essence of loyalty or love," Cuomo said.
