Battling ISIL generational fight: Jordan foreign minister

Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh

Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh has described the fight against the ISIL Takfiri militants as the “third world war,” saying the terrorist group’s brutality has no limits.

The Jordanian foreign minister made the remarks during a three-day conference on fighting extremism in Washington on Thursday, calling on the international community to cooperate in the “generational fight.”

“These terrorists have proven to have no limit or inhibition to their brutality, barbarism or savagery,” Judeh said, adding, “It’s our war as Muslims... It’s our collective war as an international community.”

The Takfiri militants are operating mainly in the Middle East region and especially in Syria and Iraq and have been committing horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations, against all Iraqi communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.

“The threat we are confronting today is unprecedented... It recognizes no boundaries, no religion, no culture, no ethnicity. It spares no religion, no culture, no ethnicity,” Judeh further said.

He warned that the terrorist group is threatening the entire world, saying, “Each one of us is a target. Let us work together to make them all a collective target.”

The Takfiri group torched a Jordanian pilot alive earlier this month. On February 3, the ISIL released a video online showing the burning to death of pilot Moaz al-Kassasbeh, who had been taken hostage in December 2014 after his plane went down in northern Syria, during a mission against the terrorist group.

The video showed Kassasbeh dressed in an orange jumpsuit and surrounded by flames inside a metal cage.

Following the release of the video, Jordan vowed “punishment and revenge” for the killing of the 26-year-old pilot. Amman executed two ISIL-linked militants just hours after the video emerged.

Amman has also vowed to intensify its airstrikes against ISIL strongholds.

On February 8, Jordan said its army jet fighters had carried out 56 retaliatory airstrikes in three consecutive days against the strongholds of the ISIL militants in northern Syria.

Several Arab countries, including Jordan, are taking part in the US-led military coalition that has purportedly been targeting ISIL positions in Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate. This is while the same Arab countries have been accused of supporting the Takfiris in Syria and Iraq, where the ISIL terrorists have been wreaking havoc.

The US-led coalition is also pounding what are said to be ISIL positions in Iraq.
