Bomb, mortar attacks kill 10 in Iraq

Iraqis remove debris after a bomb attack at New Baghdad district in eastern Baghdad, Iraq, February 7, 2015.

Security officials in Iraq say at least 10 people were killed and a number of others injured in the past 24 hours when bomb explosions and mortar rounds targeted public places as well as police forces in and around the capital, Baghdad.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said three people lost their lives and 11 others sustained injuries as a bomb went off near a cafe just south of Baghdad on Thursday night.

A bomb attack on a commercial street in Baghdad’s western neighborhood of Ghazaliyah also killed two people and wounded eight others.

Two soldiers and one civilian were killed when an explosion targeted an army patrol in the capital’s western suburb of Abu Ghraib.

Additionally, two mortar shells slammed into a farmhouse south of Baghdad, killing a farmer and his wife.

The developments came a day after an assailant drove his explosives-laden vehicle into a checkpoint in the strife-stricken city of Samarra, located 125 kilometers (78 miles) north of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and four Shia volunteer fighters. Hospital officials said at least 16 others were wounded in the attack.

Iraq casualties in January

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 1,375 Iraqis lost their lives last month, while 2,240 others were injured as a result of attacks in the country.

The UN mission added that 790 civilians were among the fatalities. The number of civilians injured also stood at 1,469. Violence also claimed the lives of a further 585 members of the Iraqi army, while 771 others sustained injuries.

A great portion of the casualties was recorded in Baghdad, where 256 civilians were killed and 758 others wounded.

ISIL militancy and Iraqi army operations

The Takfiri ISIL terrorist group started its campaign of terror in Iraq in early June 2014. The heavily-armed militants took control of the city of Mosul before sweeping through parts of the country’s Sunni Arab heartland.

Iraqi soldiers, police units, Kurdish forces, Shia volunteers and Sunni tribesmen have recently succeeded in driving the terrorists out of some areas in Iraq.
