Justice Department to sue Ferguson police over racial discrimination: Report

Smoke fills the streets in Ferguson after a grand jury's decision in the shooting of Brown.

A new report has revealed that the US Department of Justice is set to bring a lawsuit against the Ferguson police department if it does not change its racially discriminatory tactics.

Unnamed sources told CNN on Wednesday the Justice Department would sue the police force to make changes in the department.

However, Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson denied the report.

"I have received nothing new,” he said. "Everything they suggested in the past has been reasonable and we have tried to comply."

The report comes seven months after the fatal police shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson.

The shooting erupted violent protests in Ferguson and many other American cities with demonstrators demanding police respect blacks and other minority groups.

The protesters also urged US authorities to charge Wilson, but the police officer was not indicted.

US Attorney General Eric Holder had promised to complete the civil rights investigation of the shooting of Brown before leaving office.

Police brutality and the unnecessary use of heavy-handed tactics, as well as the racial profiling of some minorities, have become a major concern across the US in recent years.

The death of several unarmed black men by the hands of white police officers triggered months of protests and clashes between police and demonstrators across the country.
