Scottish government adopts new domain name

Deputy First Minister of Scotland John Swinney

The Scottish government has changed its website’s main address to “www.gov.scot”, taking advantage of the newly introduced “.scot” domain name.

The government in Edinburgh made the change from its former domain name “.gov.uk” which British ministries in London also use.

"Using the .scot domain as our primary web address will be a visible symbol of the Scottish government's online presence and our involvement with the worldwide family of Scots who choose to express their identity or affinity online," said Deputy First Minister John Swinney, AFP reported on Wednesday.

Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, who headed Scotland’s campaign of independence from Britain, has been an advocate for the separate domain name for some time.

Salmond said a separate domain would create an "online community defined by a shared commitment to Scottish identity, culture and economic promotion".

In an independence vote, which was held on September 18, Scots voted 55-45 percent to preserve the 307-year-old political union with England.
