Colombia arrests leader of organized crime group

Abimael Coneo Martinez is an aide to the leader of Colombia’s organized crime group Usuga Clan.

An aide to the leader of the ferocious Colombian organized crime group, Usuga Clan, has come under arrest in the country’s northeast.

Abimael Coneo Martinez was apprehended on Tuesday and was due to appear in court on Wednesday.

The arrestee, who is allegedly the right-hand man of the group’s leader, Dario Usuga, which gives the group its name, faces various charges, including drug trafficking and conspiracy to commit murder.

Alleged to be the country’s top crime cartel, Usuga clan also goes by the names Los Urabenos or the Autodefensas Gaitanistas.

It gathers former members of terrorist organizations that did not demobilize a decade ago after the demobilization of some 30,000 right-wing paramilitaries.

The group struggles to assert control over drug trafficking routes.

An alleged high-ranking leader of the group, named as “Moña,” was captured last August.
