General Motors recalling over 81,000 cars

GM says the problem has caused one collision but no injuries or deaths have been reported so far.

General Motors is recalling over 81,000 vehicles due to faults which can result in failure of power steering while motorists are driving the cars.

The giant automaker says the problem has caused one collision but no injuries or deaths have been reported so far.

According to GM, a message will be shown on the Driver Information Center of the vehicle and a chime will go off if power steering is lost.

However, drivers can still maintain control, but it requires greater effort when driving slowly, the company added.

The recall covers 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx vehicles as well as 2006-2007 Pontiac G6 vehicles.

Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx were manufactured from April 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006 and Pontiac G6 vehicles were manufactured from April 18, 2006, to June 30, 2006.

Almost all of the vehicles are currently in the US, Canada and Mexico, according to GM.

On December 2014, GM recalled more than 221,000 of vehicles due to a brake problem which affected Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Impalas.

In February 2014, GM recalled 2.6 million Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars because of the ignition switch problem.

GM said that the faulty ignition switches caused 42 deaths estimating that 58 people had been injured in accidents caused by the fault.
