Egyptian authorities say they have prevented militants from carrying out two suicide car bomb attacks on a police station on the restive northern Sinai Peninsula.

The explosives-laden cars were moving toward the police station in the town of Sheikh Zuweid when they were shot at by guards stationed in towers, police said on Saturday.

The cars exploded before reaching the police building, police said, adding that two police officers were wounded during the attack.

The explosion also shattered windows and damaged parts of the police station and some surrounding houses, police said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the bomb attacks, but the government in Cairo often blames such attacks on the militant group Ansar Bait al-Maqdis.

On February 10, five bomb explosions rocked the Egyptian city of Alexandria, wounding nearly a dozen people. Two bombs went off outside a police station in Montaza district in eastern Alexandria, injuring ten people. A third explosion outside a police station in another neighborhood wounded one civilian. Two other bombs went off in the same area leaving no casualties.

Egypt has been rocked with numerous bomb attacks targeting soldiers and police since the army toppled former president, Mohamed Morsi.
