At least 16 killed, 22 injured in Mexico bus-train crash

A wrecked passenger bus at the site of an accident with a train in Mexico on February 13, 2015.

At least 16 people have been killed and 22 injured after a passenger bus and a freight train collided at a grade crossing in northern Mexico, an official says.

The accident occurred in the town of Anahuac in Tamaulipas state, near the US city of Laredo, Texas, on Friday, said the official, who was not authorized to use his name.

The train's operator, Kansas City Southern de Mexico, first reported a terrible accident between one of its trains and a passenger bus. However, the company failed to give a cause for the crash.

In April last year, a bus accident in Mexico’s southern state of Veracruz left 36 people dead and four others injured.

Road accidents are one of the main causes of death in Mexico. Approximately four million traffic accidents occur in Mexico that claim around 24,000 lives a year, which amounts to almost double the number of people who die from drug violence.
