A priest in Puerto Rico has been accused of sexual abuse in a case reportedly involving a 14-year-old boy.

Floyd Lenin McCoy, 50, was detained and later freed on USD 5,000 bond, police officials said on Friday.

McCoy has been ordered to wear an ankle monitor, and is set to appear before court on March 4.

After suspending McCoy from a church in the western town of Hormigueros, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mayaguez contacted prosecutors about the case.

Puerto Rico’s Justice Department said the alleged events happened between 2013 and 2014.

At least 17 other priests and eight dioceses facing similar sex abuse accusations are under investigation in Puerto Rico, which is a US territory.

The Roman Catholic Church has been hit by numerous scandals all over the world in the past few years, including allegations of covering up the sexual abuse of children by priests, to protect pedophiles as well as its own reputation.
