Paris considers bid to host 2024 Olympic Games

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo

The Paris mayor has announced that the French capital is mulling over a bid to nominate itself as a candidate for 2024 Olympic Games, nearly 100 years after the event was last held in the city.

Anne Hidalgo says she will ask the mayors of 20 districts of Paris to vote on a possible candidacy at the end of March. Upon their endorsement, she would consult the city council in April.

Leading French sports figures have briefed her with the possibilities of the bid.

Following the report, Bernard Lapasset, the president of the French Committee of International Sport noted that France needed to "move as quickly as possible" onto negotiations with the International Olympic Committee about a bid.

There are speculations that the Socialist mayor is concerned about opposition from vying parties over the costs that the games inflict on the country’s budget.

Paris hosted summer Olympic Games in 1900 and 1924 but was unable to win bids to host the event in both 2008 and 2012.

Paris mayor's comments come as the Italian capital Rome and the US city of Boston have confirmed bids to host the 2024 Games, while Germany is still considering whether to nominate either Berlin or Hamburg.

Durban in South Africa is also expected to go ahead with a proposal to become the first African host of the games in 2024.

The deadline for submitting offers to the International Olympic Committee is September 15 with the winner to be announced in the Peruvian capital Lima in September 2017.

Tokyo is hosting the 2020 Olympic Games after it beat Istanbul and Madrid in the host race.
