New York's heroin crisis deepens with more people in the city dying from the drug overdoses than anything else.

Amid a concerted effort to stem prescription pill abuse, city officials have so far been unable to reverse the rise in heroin use and overdoses.

The death toll from heroin has more than doubled over the last three years. The profile of the average user is also amid a shift; significant numbers continue to grow among young white affluent males.
