Israel vows to block 'dangerous’ nuclear deal with Iran
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again turned up the rhetoric against Iran, saying Tel Aviv will do everything to prevent a “bad and dangerous” nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1.
Addressing a weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, he said Iran and the six major powers “are galloping toward an agreement” which would pose a danger to Israel….”
“We will do everything and will take any action to foil this bad and dangerous agreement,” Netanyahu said, claiming that a comprehensive deal between Iran and the P5+1 countries by a March 31 deadline would place “a heavy cloud” over the future of Israel and its security.
The Israeli premier’s remarks followed two rounds of talks between Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday and Sunday on the sidelines of a security conference in the southern German city of Munich.
Back in January, Zarif and Kerry held intense negotiations in the Swiss city of Geneva to help speed up the ongoing talks between Iran and the P5+1 group - the US, France, Britain, China, Russia and Germany - over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear work.
Since an interim deal was agreed in Geneva in November 2013, the negotiating sides have missed two self-imposed deadlines to ink a final agreement.
Iran and the P5+1 countries now seek to reach a high-level political agreement by April 1 and confirm the full technical details of the accord by July 1.
Netanyahu’s planned speech at US Congress
Netanyahu is also faced with growing criticism inside Israel over his planned speech at US Congress on March 3 about Iran’s nuclear program.
Opposition leaders are urging Netanyahu to cancel the upcoming speech, saying his remarks could damage Israel’s strategic relation with the United States.
Dozens of Democratic lawmakers have planned to boycott Netanyahu’s speech to protest House Speaker John Boehner’s decision to invite the Israeli leader without consulting with the White House.
US President Barack Obama will not meet with Netanyahu during his trip to Washington, according to the White House.
Vice President Joe Biden’s office also confirmed on Friday that he would not participate in Netanyahu's speech.
