On Monday the United Nations General Assembly convened. The first item on the agenda, following tributes those recently deceased, was the election of the High Commissioner for Refugees.

Portuguese statesman Manuel Gutteress was re-elected unanimously. He will continue to direct relief efforts designed to aid refugees as well as displaced and stateless persons.

Yasar Civik, the permanent representative of Turkey, described how Syrians have across the border, due to continued terrorism from foreign-backed militants seeking to overthrow the Syrian government.

Photographer Linda Berman recently visited Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, and described the services provided in the camp by the United Nations Relief Works Agency.

UN officials continue to emphasize that the refugee programs are greatly under-funded. As militants backed by Saudi Arabia, the United States, and France continue a campaign of violence, the number of people fleeing the country is not getting smaller.
