Obama’s remarks confirm US involvement in Ukraine coup: Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

The Russian foreign minister says the US president’s recent remarks about brokering power transition in Ukraine show that Washington was behind the overthrow of former Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovych.

On Monday, Sergey Lavrov said Barack Obama’s remarks confirm that Washington has been "since the very beginning involved in an anti-governmental coup” against Yanukovych’s legitimate administration in 2014.

"The rhetoric that sounded in the interview speaks about Washington’s intention to further do everything to implicitly support the actions of the current Kiev authorities which have apparently taken the course towards suppressing the conflict by force only," he added.

During an interview with CNN on Sunday, Obama admitted US “had brokered a deal to transition power in Ukraine.”

Lavrov also lashed out at the West for blocking direct talks between the Ukrainian officials and pro-Russia forces in eastern Ukraine, saying the West is negligent of Kiev’s wrongful actions.

"In regard to Ukraine, the Western colleagues are only speaking about that the main issue is to provide every support to the actions of Kiev," the Russian official pointed out.

Yanukovych was ousted following Western-backed protests in February 2014 after he refrained from signing an Association Agreement with the EU in favor of closer ties with Russia. He moved to Russia after the overthrow.

The Moscow-Washington relations have cooled sharply after Ukraine’s Black Sea peninsula of Crimea joined the Russian Federation following a referendum in March 2014.

Relations were strained further after Ukraine launched military operations in mid-April 2014 to silence the pro-Russia protests in the country’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in eastern Ukraine.

Kiev, the US and the European Union accuse Moscow of involvement in the chaotic situation in eastern Ukraine and have imposed a series of sanctions against Russian and pro-Russia figures. Moscow, however, rejects the accusation.
