The East London Mosque is one of dozens of mosques taking part in VisitMyMosque day.

A national initiative inviting the general public, to come in, ask questions and find out what really goes on in one of Britain’s mosques

For 23 year old Horatio, it’s the first time he’s stepped foot in a mosque.

There are about 3 million Muslims in the UK and about 1,600 mosques. But while surveys show Muslims actually feel more British than their fellow citizens, questions about how Islam is compatible with British values and the consequent tensions still remain.

The rise of far-right anti-Islam groups on the one hand and extremist attacks like those in Paris on the other, have fuelled sentiments. Whilst the government has been criticised for how it has tackled this.

It’s an open door policy that hopes to make it clear, that there is nothing to hide – but in fact a lot to share – inside Britain’s mosques today.
