US Secret Service to monitor social media over Super Bowl

The US Secret Service will monitor social media to thwart possible threats during the Super Bowl.

The US Secret Service will monitor all messages sent over Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites in an effort to thwart possible threats during the Super Bowl.

The Secret Service will carry out open source monitoring of social media for “situational awareness” as part of an extensive security operation for the Sunday game between the New English Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, the Department of Homeland Security says.

The operation aims to discern between real and bogus threats at the Super Bowl, annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the department noted.

A spokesperson for the Secret Service said the agency would continuously conduct monitoring of social media sites.

The Secret Service will also try to maintain airspace security without using drones, according to a department spokesman.

In addition, the Pentagon and DHS will be "providing airspace security around the venue," DHS officials said.

According to another report, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide roving command centers and trucks in order to sustain power generation and mobile communications in case of a disaster at the Super Bowl.

FEMA will also guard against a possible biological attack through supplying a network of BioWatch detectors.

Super Bowl is America’s biggest annual event and is watched by over 110 million Americans.
