New York City has agreed to pay $3.9 million to the family of an unarmed black teen shot dead by police in 2012, officials say.

"After evaluating all the facts, and consulting with key stakeholders such as the NYPD, it was determined that settling the matter was in the best interest of the city," said New York City Law Department spokesman Nicholas Paolucci in an email on Friday, referring to the shooting death of 18-year-old Ramarley Graham by police.

The unarmed African American was shot in the chest in the bathroom of his apartment in Bronx after he was followed by the cops on February 2, 2012.

The officers claimed that the boy was carrying a gun because of the way he moved his hands near his waist.

"This was a tragic case," Paolucci said.

According to the Law Department, the slain boy’s brother will receive $500,000, his grandmother will get $450,000, and his mother will receive $40,000 while $2.95 million will go to his estate.

New York City settled the matter at a time that other similar incidents have fueled tensions across US.

Police killing of African Americans, namely Akai Gurley, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner, has led to many protests against police brutality and racial profiling so far.
