Israeli forces have killed a Palestinian man and wounded another in the northern part of the occupied West Bank, Palestinian sources say.

Ahmad al-Najjar, 19, was shot dead by Israeli troops near the city of Nablus late on Saturday, the sources said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed that soldiers had opened live fire on two Palestinians, adding that one of them was wounded in the leg.

She further noted that the second Palestinian had been "hit", without giving more details.

A day earlier, Israeli troops launched an assault on Palestinian demonstrators in several towns and villages across the West Bank, injuring two protesters.

Violence erupted after Friday prayers when Israeli forces attacked Palestinians protesting against Tel Aviv’s illegal settlement activities.

In recent months, Israeli forces have frequently attacked Palestinian protesters and their homes in the West Bank, arresting dozens of Palestinian people, who are then transferred to Israeli detention centers, where they are kept without any charges brought up against them.

The Palestinian Authority Department of Prisoners Affairs said in a statement on January 5 that Palestinian prisoners kept inside Israeli detention facilities are suffering from serious health problems, yet they are denied proper medical treatment.

Over 7,000 Palestinians are reportedly held in 17 Israeli prisons and detention camps. Also, some 540 Palestinians are held without any trial under administrative detention, which is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows Israel to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.
