Mitt Romney decides not to run for president in 2016

Former governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney

Former governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney would not run for president in the 2016 presidential election, saying it is time to “give other leaders in the party the opportunity to become our next nominee.”

“I’ve been asked, and will certainly be asked again if there are any circumstances whatsoever that might develop that could change my mind,” Romney said on Friday.

“That seems unlikely. Accordingly, I’m not organizing a PAC or taking donations and I’m not hiring a campaign team,” the 2012 nominee added.

The former Republican governor also noted that he does not want to be a roadblock for those who may be better equipped to become the GOP’s standard bearer going forward.

Former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee and former Florida governor Jeb Bush are major Republican names considering a run.

Jeb Bush said that he was “actively exploring” a run for the US presidency in 2016 and would establish a political action committee raise funds for his bid for presidency.

Governors of New Jersey Chris Christie, Rick Perry of Texas, and Scott Walker of Wisconsin, and Senators like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul are other potential Republican candidates.
