US in Myanmar for economic benefits

In this edition of the Economic Divide, we examine the reasons for Washington’s interest in expanding relations with Myanmar.

Since the dramatic thawing of US-Myanmar relations following the political ascent of President Thein Sein, high ranking US diplomatic figures such as President Obama and Hillary Clinton have visited Myanmar.

Some pundits believe that America’s real interest is to take Myanmar away from China’s sphere, economically, while building a military presence in China’s border.
