German strike cancels hundreds of flights

Workers of the Ford car factory in the Cologne suburb of Niehl stage a temporary walkout.

Tens of thousands of workers demanding higher wages went on a strike across Germany on Thursday.

Hundreds of flights were canceled as workers at two airports walked off the job to join carmakers and suppliers in the one-day action.

A union representing them said as many as 70,000 people took part in the strikes. The walkout came after talks with their employers for wage increases failed for the third time.

The action affected some of Germany’s biggest companies, including Ford Motor, Daimler, Continental, ArcelorMittal and ThyssenKrupp.

IG Mettal, representing workers at manufacturing and engineering companies, plans additional nationwide strikes in the coming days.

The union represents 3.7 million workers.

The pilots of the largest German carrier, Lufthansa, have announced strikes for next Tuesday at Frankfurt Airport over retirement benefits.
