UK summons Russian envoy over intruding bombers

Britain summoned the Russian ambassador over the Russian military planes intrusion incident.

Britain on Thursday summoned the Russian ambassador after Russian military planes were found flying close to British airspace.

"Russian aircraft manoeuvres yesterday are part of an increasing pattern of out of area operations by Russian aircraft," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

"While the Russian planes did not enter sovereign UK airspace and were escorted by RAF Typhoons throughout the time they were in the UK area of interest, the Russian planes caused disruption to civil aviation.

"That is why we summoned the Russian Ambassador today to account for the incident."

Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Thursday that Typhoon fighter jets had intercepted two Russian long-range bombers which had flown close to UK airspace.

The MoD said the incident occurred on Wednesday and prompted the Royal Air Force (RAF) to launch the fighter jets from bases at Lossiemouth in Scotland and Coningsby in eastern England.

The Ministry said that the planes were Tupolev Tu-95 bombers, known by their NATO classification as Russian "bears".
