Iran appoints new ambassador to UN

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has picked a new envoy to the United Nations after Washington illegally rejected a previous nominee for the post.

“Gholamali Khoshroo has been appointed as the Islamic Republic of Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations headquarters in New York,” IRIB reported quoting a statement released by Iranian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

Back in April 2014, US president Barack Obama signed a law which effectively barred Iranian diplomat Hamid Aboutalebi from serving as Tehran’s ambassador to the UN. The legislation was based on a bill in US Congress claiming that the Iranian diplomat was involved in the takeover of the US embassy in Tehran following the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Iran swiftly condemned the decision, saying that it is clearly against the principles of international law and also the UN Charter. Tehran added that Aboutalebi would remain Iran’s sole nominee for the position, denying requests for considering a replacement.

However, the statement on Wednesday said Iran has appointed Khoshroo to protect the national interests of the country to the fullest extent possible and promote the country’s international position, “especially, considering the current critical condition in the region and the world.”

Khoshroo is Iran’s current ambassador to Switzerland. The seasoned diplomat has served in various positions in Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was deputy foreign minister for legal and International affairs between 2002 and 2005 when Iran started its nuclear negotiations with world powers.

As a sociologist, Khoshroo studied at Tehran University and New School for Social Research, New York.

Khoshroo was Iran’s envoy to the UN from 1989 to 1995.
