US film slammed for 'anti-Muslim' hatred
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) has condemned a new American movie, saying the US film industry wants to demonize Muslims by making movies like American Sniper.
“Hollywood makes money out of these types of films,” ADC National President Samer Khalaf told Press TV.
Hollywood “must demonize somebody -- somebody has to play the role of the bad guy,” he added.
He made the remarks after the ADC, the US-based Arab civil rights organization, expressed concern that the release of Hollywood movie American Sniper triggered a “drastic increase” of anti-Muslim hatred.
In a letter to the film's director, Clint Eastwood, and star Bradley Cooper, the group condemned the violent rhetoric used by filmgoers.
“It is our opinion that you could play a significant role in assisting us in alleviating the danger we are facing,” wrote the letter.
The group notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local police about threats that have tripled since the film’s release over the past few weeks. It said the violent threats have been a result of how Arabs and Muslims are depicted in the movie.
The group warned that a majority of the threats have come via social media. Among the threats it mentioned a tweet that reads, "Nice to see a movie where the Arabs are portrayed for who they really are — vermin scum intent on destroying us."
The ADC called on its members to keep an eye on more threats.
The film recounts the story of Chris Kyle, who after numerous deployments to Iraq, became the famed US Navy Seal notorious for the highest known single kill count in US military history.
Having earned six Oscar nominations, including best picture, the movie sparked a debate in the US over the occupation of Iraq and the depiction of veterans in popular culture.
