‘UK most spied upon country ’

The British government’s surveillance camera commissioner has warned that the country risks “sleepwalking into a surveillance state”.

Tony Porter argues that too many of Britain’s millions of CCTV cameras do little in preventing crimes.

He also believes that Britons are not aware of the true scale of the government’s snooping activities.

‘Useless cameras’

A London-based political commentator believes that the CCTV cameras installed across the country are “useless” when it comes to combating crimes.

“I think we are the most spied upon country certainly in the Western world, the so-called free world. But I think they are useless.”

Alan Hart also rejects the British officials’ justification for massive surveillance program over what they call growing terrorism threats. He contends that surveillance cannot tackle terrorism as it fails to address the causes of terrorism.

“When you try to deal with terrorism, you have to address the causes of terrorism. All they are doing with cameras is addressing the consequences…. A lot of the cameras have nothing to do with security.”

 Life under surveillance

According to the British Security Industry Association, there are up to 6 million CCTV cameras across the UK. BSIA estimates that every Briton, on average, is being recorded by about 70 cameras each day.

The United Kingdom has one of the highest totals of CCTV cameras in the world. There is a CCTV camera for every 11 people.
