US to put more economic pressure on Russia by oil: Analyst

The US will continue exerting economic pressure on Russia over the crisis in Ukraine, says an analyst.

The United States will continue exerting economic pressure on Russia over the crisis in Ukraine because Moscow is dependent on oil, says political commentator Ivan Eland.

The US will probably continue to put “economic pressure because I think the United States also feels that the weak point of Russia right now is their economy because oil prices are down and they depend heavily on oil prices,” Eland, an American defense analyst, told Press TV on Monday.

The analyst also rejected any war between the two super powers.

He said that the US would avoid military confrontation with Russia over the Ukraine crisis because both countries have nuclear weapons and any military confrontation would be disastrous.

President Barack Obama on Sunday announced that the United States was not seeking a military confrontation with Russia.

“I’ve been very clear that it would not be effective to engage in a military conflict with Russia on this issue,” Obama said during his visit to India.

He said that Washington would continue to put more pressure on Moscow, adding that his country is looking at all options, except “military confrontation.”

Obama also noted that the United States has done everything to isolate Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

Since last year, the United States and the European Union have set up a network of sanctions on Moscow.

The US accuses Russia of arming troops fighting alongside pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. Moscow denies any involvement in the fighting.
