Iran will proceed with logical nuclear talks: Larijani

Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani (R) and Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic meet in Tehran on Jan 26, 2015.

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says the country will continue its negotiations with the P5+1 countries on its nuclear program based on logical principles and standards.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, like in the past, will continue nuclear negotiations while observing its logical principles and standards,” Larijani said in a meeting with Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic in Tehran on Monday.

He added that Iran and the six countries are likely to reach a comprehensive agreement provided that baseless excuses do not torpedo the process.

Majlis enrichment motion

The meeting between Larijani and Pusic comes a day after the Iranian parliament announced a motion under which the government would be obliged to step up uranium enrichment utilizing new-generation centrifuges.

The Iranian parliament has another motion on the table which will require the government to produce 60-percent enriched uranium in case the US Congress goes ahead with plans to impede the ongoing nuclear negotiations.

Iran and the P5+1 countries - the US, France, Britain, China, Russia and Germany – are in talks to secure a final comprehensive deal over Tehran’s nuclear work.

Since an interim deal was agreed in the Swiss city of Geneva in November 2013, the negotiating sides have missed two deadlines to ink a final agreement.

Tehran and the six countries now seek to reach a high-level political agreement by March 1 and to confirm the full technical details of the accord by July 1.

Croatia stance on Iran nuclear issue

The Croatian foreign minister said her country hopes that issues pertaining to Iran’s nuclear program would be settled in a balanced way through the negotiating sides’ determination.

She added that a fair solution to the nuclear issue would help promote peace and stability in the world, saying that Croatia, as a new member of the European Union, is prepared to have necessary cooperation in this regard.

Pusic also expressed her country’s determination to boost political, parliamentary, economic, trade and industrial ties with Iran.
