Sabotaging Iran talks by Republicans, Israel end in conflict in region: Analyst

An analyst says sabotaging Iran’s talks by the Republicans could lead to a “bigger conflict.”

An American political commentator says sabotaging Iran’s nuclear negotiations by the Republicans and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could lead to a “bigger conflict” in the region.

“If the Republicans do align with Netanyahu in trying to sabotage the conclusion of the P5+1 talks, then this greatly increases the likelihood of a much bigger conflict in the [Persian] Gulf and the entire region for a very long time to come,” Jeff Steinberg, who is a senior Editor at Executive Intelligence Review, told Press TV on Sunday.

He made the comments when asked about House Speaker John Boehner’s invitation of Netanyahu to address a joint session of Congress without coordinating with the White House.

“It’s a political stunt. It’s a political stunt by the Republicans, who are in fact attempting to throw up roadblocks to a final P5+1 agreement,” Steinberg said.

“It’s also a political stunt on behalf of Netanyahu because his visit to Washington and the prestige of addressing a joint session of Congress will be only taking place just several weeks before the Israeli elections and in these elections, the prospect of a Netanyahu victory is now greatly reduced,” he added.

The Israeli premier is scheduled to address Congress on March 3.

Netanyahu will also attend a conference in Washington by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a powerful pro-Israel lobby group that has been pressing hard for a tougher approach towards Iran.
