Blair colluded with Gaddafi over Libya exiles: Reports

Newly released documents have revealed that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair colluded with Libya’s ex-dictator Muammar Gaddafi over abusing Libyan dissidents.

The documents, which were released by the Libyan government and published in British media on Friday, showed that the Blair administration cooperated with Libya in arranging for dissidents to be kidnapped and flown to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, along with their families.

The obtained documents also included a letter written by Blair in which he thanked Gaddafi for “the excellent cooperation between the two countries’ counter-terrorism agencies.”

The letter, written in 2007, followed a period during which Gaddafi’s intelligence officers were allowed to operate in the UK. The Libyan agents approached the dissidents and tried to persuade them to work as informants for the agencies of both countries.

Furthermore, the letter, which began with “Dear Mu’aamar” and signed with “Best wishes yours ever, Tony,” included an apology by Blair for the UK government’s failure to deport five refugees back to Libya.

“I believe that it is essential that this decision is not allowed to undermine the effective bilateral co-operation which has developed between the United Kingdom and Libya in recent years,” Blair wrote in the letter.

Lawmaker Norman Baker described the disclosures as “ghastly,” adding, “The more revelations that come out about Blair’s premiership, the more distasteful it seems. He seems to have no regard for basic human rights, civil values or morality.”

“How can he live with himself? I am ashamed that the UK could apologize for not sending people to a country where they would almost certainly be imprisoned and tortured,” the MP added.

A spokesman for Blair rejected the disclosures, saying the former premier “has always been opposed to the use of torture” and “has never condoned its use.”

The revealed documents were discovered in abandoned government offices in Tripoli following the revolution which ousted Gaddafi and led to his killing in October 2011.
