British minister urges elimination of anti-Semitism

UK Home Secretary Theresa May

UK Home Secretary Theresa May has called for the elimination of anti-Semitism in the country and more efforts to protect Britain’s Jewish community.

Speaking at a Sunday service held to commemorate the Jewish victims of the terror attacks in France, May said Britain must redouble its efforts to wipe out anti-Semitism, saying Jewish people must feel safe in the country.

May pledged more police patrols in key Jewish areas, including synagogues and schools, after senior counter-terrorism officers warned of a “heightened concern” about the risk to the Jewish community.

She added: “The dreadful events in Paris are a reminder of the serious terrorist threat that we face. I know that many Jewish people in this country are feeling vulnerable and fearful and you’re saying that you’re anxious for your families, for your children and yourselves.”

“I never thought I would see the day when members of the Jewish community in the United Kingdom would say they were fearful of remaining here in the United Kingdom,” she went on to say.

May’s pledge came two days after Britain’s top counter-terror officer, Mark Rowley, warned about increased anti-Semitism across the globe and heightened concern about possible attacks on the Jewish community in Britain.
