Ukraine bus attack not by pro-Russians: Russian OSCE envoy

Russia’s envoy to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has confirmed a conclusion by the European body that a recent attack in Ukraine’s Volnovakha was not carried out by pro-Russia forces.

“The [OSCE] monitors examined the craters on the site of the attack. The conclusions are that the fire did come from a Grad [multiple rocket launcher] system but not from an eastern direction as the Ukrainian military has claimed but from a northern direction,” Rossiya 24 quoted Andrei Kelin as saying on Sunday.

OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) to Ukraine had earlier said in a report that the rockets, which hit a bus in the government-controlled town of Volnovakha, in the eastern Donetsk region were not fired from the east, where pro-Russia forces hold ground.

The SMM added that, after “conducting a comprehensive inspection” in Volnovakha, no evidence was found to blame the pro-Russia forces for the attack.

In the January 13 attack in Volnovakha, which is located in the volatile Donetsk region, 12 civilians were killed and 17 others were injured.

Kiev and the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic have been blaming each other for the terrorist attack.

The OSCE has announced, however, that it will continue to monitor the situation to gather more evidence.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence pro-Russia protests there in mid-April 2014.

According to the latest figures released by the United Nations, more than 4,800 people have been killed in the fighting.

Kiev and its Western allies accuse Russia of having a hand in the chaotic situation in eastern Ukraine. Moscow categorically denies the allegation.
