Iran's embassy in Baghdad has announced that American troops in Iraq have released an Iranian citizen after two days of detention.

An informed source at the embassy told IRIB that US forces on Thursday freed Nader Qorbani, the deputy head of the headquarters for reconstructing religious sites in Iraq, shortly after making harsh accusations against him.

According to a Wednesday statement by the US military, the Iranian national was arrested late Tuesday at Baghdad International Airport on the charge of 'involvement in facilitating Iranian weapons shipments into Iraq'.

The US also alleged that Qorbani was a senior member of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and that he carrying an 'unspecified amount' of cocaine.

The Iranian source said that the prompt release indicated the extent of 'baseless' accusations brought against Iranian nationals by US forces stationed in the oil-rich country.

US troops in Iraq frequently detain Iranian citizens only to release them shortly after their arrest. Iran neighbors Iraq and has been heavily involved in reconstruction efforts in the war-torn country.
