Death toll from south Brazil's rainstorm hits 151
On April 29, torrential rains poured down on Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul. The country’s Civil Defense agency now says the rainstorm has so far taken the lives of 151 victims with more than a hundred still missing.
Soon after the rain hit, floods and mudslides made some 600,000 people homeless. According to local authorities, the storm directly impacted over 2.2 million residents in the region.
In visiting the affected areas, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva promised more aid and new houses for the displaced.
Besides the Brazilian government, donors and volunteers have been playing a major role as well. Estimates show more than 15,000 volunteers from all over Brazil have contributed to disaster relief in the region.
